Charles Walter Hill,
a pioneer educator, was the first black principal
appointed in the Atlanta Public School System. During his forty-seven years
of dedicated service, as teacher and principal, he was instrumental in
fostering and aiding the cause of public education for blacks in Atlanta. The Charles Walter Hill Elementary
School
which was named for the educator became an important addition to the
Atlanta Public School Systems in 1947 and is still in existence today.

During the days of marches and
demonstrations for civil rights in the 1960’s, Archibald
Hill Jr. (grandson of Charles Walter
Hill and Lottie Carey Hill) was a lawyer and
politician. A personal friend of Dr. Martin Luther King, Hill
organized and led civil rights demonstrations and strikes. Hill
served four terms in the Oklahoma State House of Representatives and became
the first black to serve in a House leadership position.

Maude Elizabeth Hill (daughter
of Charles Walter Hill and Lottie Carey Hill), lived longer than any of the nine Hill
children. It is believed that she lived to be in her nineties.

Community activist and
visionary Charles W. Greenlea
“Pete” (grandson of
Charles Walter Hill and Lottie Carey Hill),
was responsible for restoring the neighborhood of Summerhill,
one of three original African American Settlements established in Atlanta
after the Civil War . Pete received a master’s degree from Columbia University in Journalism. His firm belief in higher
education and empowerment for the black community led him to organize NAACP
chapters across the state of Georgia. An accomplished civil rights activist, Pete
was also Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Boy Scout
Master. Greenlea Commons, a popular town
home community in the heart of Atlanta, is named for him.

Greater Victory Christian Center in East Point, GA!

In 2004, ophthalmologist Pamela R Henderson, MD (granddaugher of
John D. Wright and Grethel Hill Wright)
established the Henderson Eye Center in Springfield, MA!

Harold Cunningham (grandson
of Charles Walter Hill and Lottie Carey Hill),
is an avid computer user. He and his wife Alberta Cunningham
are known to send out delightful custom created cards for all occasions!!!

Edward Billups (grandson of John D. Wright and Grethel Hill Wright), a trailblazing Atlanta actor,
director and arts administrator helped lay the groundwork for Atlanta
Theater today. He was the co-founder of Black Image, Atlanta’s first professional black theater company.
Among several television and film roles, he guest starred on the popular
show In the Heat of the Night and is also credited with being a
major influence on award winning actor Samuel L. Jackson.

A native of Athens, Georgia, pharmacist John D. Wright (son of William Wright and Jeanette Wright) is
said to have filled over 1,000,000 prescriptions! Dr. Wright
completed both the elementary schools and high school in nine years and was
valedictorian of his class. He also maintained high scholastic
averages in Nashville’s Meharry Medical College and at Walden University. Out of 135 persons taking the State Medical
Board in Kentucky, he was one of 27 to pass and be licensed. In
all of his professional work and services he was never cited by the
Narcotic Service for an infraction of its rules and regulations.

Educator, Administrator, and Family
Leader Anne Wright Bronner (daughter of John D. Wright and Grethel
Hill Wright) was the recipient of
the National Clark Alumni Association’s Presidential Award. She
served as one of several directors of the Instructional Services Center of the Atlanta Public Schools System. Anne was
an active member in many civic clubs and organizations including Delta
Sigma Theta Sorority and First Congregational Church U.C.C. Her
enthusiasm and devotion for preserving
our family’s past and present, led her to archive the family
history. She has compiled hundreds of photos, articles, and various
other records in an effort to maintain our history for future
generations. Anne is married to Arthur Bronner,
one of the founding members of the famous Bronner
Brothers Enterprise.

As
the matriarch of the Wright-Hill family, Ruth Hill Thompson (daughter of Frederick Douglas Hill and Maude Collins
Hill) is the oldest living relative
in our family. “Little Ruth” as she is affectionately
known was born on February 28, 1916 and is 89 years young!!!
